Jonas Engwall on Scaling the Future of Streaming

After helping M6 successfully launch M6+, Bedrock is turning its focus to one of its biggest projects yet: migrating RTL+ in Germany onto its streaming technology platform in 2026. As part of the Bertelsmann family, Bedrock powers the streaming services of leading European broadcasters, combining advanced technology with a deep understanding of the media business.

In an interview with World Screen, Bedrock CEO Jonas Engwall discussed how the company is helping broadcasters accelerate their digital transformation, the evolving role of connected TV and advertising, and how AI is shaping the next era of streaming.

Redefining Scale in a Changing Industry

“YouTube has become part of the benchmark we’re all working against,” Engwall said. “You can’t ignore it—but you also can’t build your strategy around it. The challenge for broadcasters is using global platforms to reach people while giving them a reason to return to their own destination.”

That philosophy drives how Bedrock supports its partners: by building streaming platforms that give them full control over their audiences, data, and monetization models.

A Platform Built for Collaboration

Bedrock’s model is simple: scale through partnership. As a joint venture between M6 and RTL Group, the company combines European media expertise with advanced engineering to deliver a platform that powers millions of users across multiple markets.

“As a European player, you need scale to compete globally,” Engwall said. “By operating across several countries, we can keep investing in innovation and share the benefits across all partners. That’s how we make premium streaming accessible, efficient, and sustainable.”

The approach allows broadcasters to focus on what they do best, creating great content and serving their audiences, while Bedrock takes care of the product experience. “It’s about building strength together,” Engwall added.

From M6+ to RTL+: Lessons in Evolution

The migration of RTL+ to Bedrock’s platform is well underway, with completion targeted for the first half of 2026. “Every migration teaches us something new,” Engwall said. “The lessons from M6+ directly shape what we’re building for RTL+.”

RTL+ continues to expand its offer with live programming, sports, podcasts, and on-demand content—all running on a unified, cost-efficient platform. “We’re now able to deliver a better experience at a lower cost thanks to the scale we’ve reached,” he said.

Unlocking the Value of Connected TV

Advertising remains a cornerstone of Bedrock’s vision for streaming. “SVOD brought a new revenue stream, but hybrid models are the future,” Engwall said. “Connected TV is now at the center of that shift. We’re working closely with major CTV brands to make sure our partners can tap into this momentum.”

Through smarter targeting and new ad formats, Bedrock helps broadcasters build streaming businesses that combine reach with revenue growth.

Keeping Pace with Global Innovation

To stay ahead, Bedrock’s teams monitor streaming experiences around the world through two dedicated streaming walls, giving product and design teams a live view of the latest global platforms. “It’s how we benchmark, test, and stay close to innovation,” Engwall explained. “It keeps us sharp.”

AI as an Engine for Efficiency and Discovery

AI already plays a major role in Bedrock’s platform—from monitoring system stability to enhancing personalization. “We’re now entering the next phase with agentic AI,” said Engwall. “It’s not just about automation; it’s about redefining efficiency and creativity.”

Bedrock also introduced the Streaming Platform Ratio, a KPI that tracks technology costs as a share of streaming revenues. “Our goal is to help all partners operate at around 10 percent, which is best in class in Europe,” Engwall said. “It’s a real measure of platform performance.”

Looking Ahead

With continued growth across Europe and a clear focus on operational excellence, Bedrock is preparing for another milestone year. “Our priority is completing the RTL+ migration,” Engwall said. “By 2026, both RTL Group and Bedrock will be profitable in streaming. We’ve reached the scale to innovate continuously and deliver a platform that stands among the very best in the world.”
